Academic Calendar, Books & Classes

Classes start on Monday, September 9, 2019. Review the full academic calendar carefully and plan accordingly for class meeting days, holidays & breaks. Students are also expected to know and adhere to class attendance policies. Please log into link.jwu.edu often to check for holds & announcements.

To get your class schedule and a listing of required books:

  1. Log into jwuLink, and go to the Academics page

  2. Click View Course Schedule (under the Course Registration & Schedule section)

  3. Click the Schedule Details tab in the lower panel

  4. Click on each course title, then select Bookstore Links

You can also enter your J# to get a listing of required books when visiting the online bookstore. You have the option of rent or purchasing your books online or in person at the Downcity or Harborside bookstores (go to the location where your classes are held).

Baking & Pastry Arts and Culinary Arts Students:

You must report to laboratory classes in full uniform and remain in full uniform at all times until leaving the premise. Students not in full uniform will not be admitted into class. All components of the uniform are expected to be clean and pressed. Review detailed uniform policies. If you did not get a uniform during summer orientation, pick yours up during opening weekend at the Harborside Bookstore (scroll down to Welcome Weekend Office Hours for bookstore hours).

Tool Kit & Text Book Distribution will take place on Sunday, 9/8/2019, from noon to 2pm in the atrium of the Cuisinart Center for Culinary Excellence.

Banks

Students can bank at any institution of their choice. The following banks, listed as a convenience, have full-service locations in the Downcity area: Bank of America, Bank Newport, Bank Rhode Island, Citizens Bank (Citizens ATMs are located on-campus in the Xavier Academic Complex and Harborside Academic Center), Santander, and Washington Trust.

Discounts

Many retailers provide a discount to college students, typically after showing a student ID. The following attractions & stores are just a few who have provided discounts in the past: Alex and Ani, Amazon, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Francesca’s, Geoff’s Sandwiches, H&M, J. Crew, Providence Place Cinema 16 and IMAX, Providence Performing Arts Center (Broadway shows), RISD Museum, and Sajo’s Gourmet Pizzeria.

ID Card

A JWU ID card is needed to enter campus buildings, use services, and for identification. If you don't have one, go to the ID Services area in Student Academic & Financial Services on Saturday or Sunday (scroll down to Welcome Weekend Office Hours).

Login & Other Tech Help

Visit the Information Technology website to learn about computer labs, printing, WiFi, OneDrive, student discounts, or to request help with any login issue.

Mobile Apps

You have lots to do & we want you to stay informed – so download JWU Mobile & other apps for quick on-the-go access to key university resources. Be sure to get the Microsoft Outlook app too, so you can check your JWU email easily & anytime!

Please visit the Parking & Transportation Services website to familiarize yourself with Wildcat Wheels bus schedules, parking regulations, and local transport info.

Residential Hall Floor Meetings: 4 or 4:30pm

Each floor in the res halls will gather for a quick meeting. Look for detailed instructions when you move in.

Roller Rave: 8pm–midnight, Wildcat Center Main Gym

We are turning our gym into a roller skating rink for one night only. Come skate while listening to music on a state of the art sound system complete with disco lights. Who knows, you might even meet your new best friend while skating!

Dean’s Welcome: 9am

Each college will be holding mandatory welcome meetings for students in their academic programs.

Paw Print Meet & Greet: 2-4pm, Gaebe Commons

Come meet reps from departments across campus to learn about all the many resources, services, and opportunities that each area provides. After visiting the tables, enter your name into a raffle to win amazing prizes!

Ignite the Night: 8pm, Gaebe Commons

The upper classes welcome our newest Wildcats to campus with a very special JWU tradition. New students are given lanterns to add their light to the JWU community during a special ceremony. Afterwards, enjoy refreshments & lawn games!

First Day Froyo: 5-7pm, Red Mango

Dining Services and the Student Involvement & Leadership office would like to treat you to frozen yogurt!

Tuesday, 9/10

Meet the University Involvement Board: 2-5pm, Gaebe Commons

The University Involvement Board (or UIB) is one of our biggest sources of entertainment. They would like to welcome you to campus and show off a little of what they do.

Wednesday, 9/11

Laser Tag: 5-9pm, Harborside Greenspace

We are bringing one of the largest portable laser tag arenas to campus. Battle your friends in this fun take on arena laser tag.

Thursday, 9/12

Food Truck Night: 7-1pm, Scotts Miracle-Gro Field

Some of RI’s best food trucks will be on the Harborside Campus prior to the outdoor movie. All food trucks take cash; some will accept credit/debit cards.

Outdoor Viewing of Aladdin: 8pm, Scotts Miracle-Gro Field

Join UIB as they show a movie under the stars. Bring a lawn blanket, chair, etc. and watch a movie on a giant outdoor screen.

Friday, 9/13

Involvement Fest: 1-4pm, Gaebe Commons

100+ clubs and organizations will be on hand to show you what they do. This is a great way to sign up for membership in something you love or find interesting.

Comedian: 9pm, Schneider Auditorium

Stay tuned for this year’s special guest. In previous years we have had Nicole Byer, Kenan Thompson, Matt Bellassai, and Pete Davidson.

JWU Zoo Takeover: 5–9pm, Roger Williams Zoo

We rented out the zoo for JWU students to explore all it has to offer. Wildcat Wheels bus shuttles will be in service.

Sunday, 9/15

Battle of the Bands: 5–7pm, Wildcat Center Lounge

This kick off to our new Battle of the Bands series will be a fun evening as we enjoy music from the campus and local music scenes. Vote for your favorite to advance to the next round. The winner of the entire series will open for the Wildcat Wahoo Carnival headliner in May!

Wildcat Housing Move-In

In late August, you will receive an email confirming your specified move-in time for Saturday, September 7, 2019. All times will be in the 8am to noon range. Please adhere to your assigned time to ensure a smooth arrival process for all families. In that email, you will also receive a vehicle permit to print & display on your dashboard. Campus Safety & Security will be directing your vehicle upon arrival.

After you receive your room key, begin moving your belongings in immediately. Many families bring hand trucks, rolling containers or other means to make the process easier. Plan ahead for the weather, dress for the day, wear comfortable shoes, and expect to do some walking between buildings & parking areas.
