Academic Calendar, Books & Classes

Classes start on Monday, September 9, 2019. Review the academic calendar carefully and plan accordingly for class meeting days, holidays & breaks. Be sure to know and adhere to class attendance policies as well.

You have the option of renting or purchasing your books online or in person at the Downcity or Harborside bookstores (go to the location where your classes are held). To get your class schedule and a listing of required books:

  1. Log into jwuLink, and go to the Academics page

  2. Click View Course Schedule (under the Course Registration & Schedule section)

  3. Click the Schedule Details tab in the lower panel

  4. Click on each course title, then select Bookstore Links

Baking & Pastry Arts and Culinary Arts Students:

You must report to laboratory classes in full uniform and remain in full uniform at all times until leaving the premises. Students not in full uniform will not be admitted into class. All components of the uniform are expected to be clean and pressed. Review detailed uniform policies. If you did not get a uniform during summer orientation, pick yours up during opening weekend at the Harborside Bookstore (scroll down to Welcome Weekend Office Hours for bookstore hours).

Tool Kit & Text Book Distribution will take place on Sunday, 9/8, from noon to 2pm in the atrium of the Cuisinart Center for Culinary Excellence.

Banks

Students can bank at any institution of their choice. The following banks, listed as a convenience, have full-service locations in the Downcity area: Bank of America, Bank Newport, Bank Rhode Island, Citizens Bank (Citizens ATMs are located on-campus in the Xavier Academic Complex and Harborside Academic Center), Santander, and Washington Trust.

Discounts

Many retailers provide a discount to college students, typically after showing a student ID. The following attractions & stores are just a few who have provided discounts in the past: Alex and Ani, Amazon, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Francesca’s, Geoff’s Sandwiches, H&M, J. Crew, Providence Place Cinema 16 and IMAX, Providence Performing Arts Center (Broadway shows), RISD Museum, and Sajo’s Gourmet Pizzeria.

ID Card

A JWU ID card is needed to enter campus buildings, use services, and for identification. If you don't have one, go to the ID Services area in Student Academic & Financial Services on Saturday or Sunday (scroll down to Welcome Weekend Office Hours).

Login & Other Tech Help

Visit the Information Technology website to learn about computer labs, printing, WiFi, OneDrive, student discounts, or to request help with any login issue.

Mobile Apps

You have lots to do & we want you to stay informed – so download JWU Mobile & other apps for quick on-the-go access to key university resources. Be sure to get the Microsoft Outlook app too, so you can check your JWU email easily & anytime!

Parking & Transportation

Please visit the Parking & Transportation Services website to familiarize yourself with Wildcat Wheels bus schedules, parking regulations, and local transport info.

Shopping 

Nearby shopping destinations include Providence Place Mall (Macy’s, Bed Bath & Beyond), Garden City Center (The Container Store, Crate & Barrel, Whole Foods), and Warwick Mall (Target, Nordstrom Rack, JCPenney). The following stores are also close to campus in Providence, Seekonk and Warwick: Walmart, At Home, and Kohl’s. Want to check out local shops? Visit goprovidence.com.

Ignite the Night: 8pm, Gaebe Commons

→ Join us as the entire campus community (including JWU alumni) welcomes the Class of 2023. Wildcats will participate in an illuminated lantern hanging ceremony in the trees of Gaebe Commons. Plus, there will be games and s’mores! Our campus president, Marie Bernardo-Sousa, will also welcome our new Wildcats to campus at this JWU tradition.

→ Keeping with Welcome Week tradition, the Student Involvement & Leadership and UIB teams are bringing food trucks and an outdoor screening of Aladdin to campus. Food trucks will arrive at 7pm and the movie will start at 8pm. Bring blankets, pillows, and money for food while you enjoy the film under the stars!

Involvement Fest: 2-4pm, Gaebe Commons

→ Discover all of the different ways to get #InvolvedAtJWU and meet the 120+ clubs and organizations that JWU has to offer! Chat it up with members of our campus organizations about what they do, and how you can get involved. Students will also enjoy FREE Del's Lemonade and can purchase posters from the Poster Sale. → Connect with local employers for their part-time job opportunities.

Wildcat Housing Move-In

In late August, you will receive an email confirming your specified move-in time for Saturday, September 7, 2019. All times will be in the 8am to noon range. Please adhere to your assigned time to ensure a smooth arrival process for all families. In that email, you will also receive a vehicle permit to print & display on your dashboard. Campus Safety & Security will be directing your vehicle upon arrival.

After you receive your room key, begin moving your belongings in immediately. Many families bring hand trucks, rolling containers or other means to make the process easier. Plan ahead for the weather, dress for the day, wear comfortable shoes, and expect to do some walking between buildings & parking areas.
